Evanescence Find Light Through Darkness in ‘Use My Voice’ Video

Band alludes to recent activist movements in new visual

Evanescence have released a new video for their single “Use My Voice,” directed by Eric Howell. The clip serves as a metaphor for recent activism movements, depicting singer Amy Lee alone in the darkness before she finds solidarity with her bandmates and a diverse group of people as the light breaks through. Howell, who first met Lee in 2015 when she contributed the end theme for his film Voice from the Stone, wanted the video to act as “a hopeful metaphor of moving from darkness into a more illuminated future by being heard.”

“We are proud to stand up and join the fight against the injustice, lies and oppression that plague our country and the world,” Lee said. “No matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from or who you love, your voice matters. We hope to shine a light in the darkness, to empower and inspire. Use your voice. Vote.”

“Use My Voice” follows the singles “Wasted on You” and “The Game Is Over.” All three will be featured on Evanescence’s upcoming album The Bitter Truth, their first collection of new material in over a decade. The quarantine-filmed video for “Wasted on You” was recently nominated in the Best Rock category at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, airing this Sunday, August 30th.

With Evanescence‘s new single, “Use My Voice,” lead singer Amy Lee is encouraging all Americans to find their own voices and vote in the 2020 election. Lee shared it with the nonpartisan organization HeadCount, which is aiming to register 200,000 new voters this year. The song features Lee‘s fellow female rockers and will be on “The Bitter Truth,” Evanescence‘s first full album in nine years. She speaks to “CBS This Morning” co-host Anthony Mason.

Amy Lee says new Evanescence music has ‘A lot of Guitars’

Evanescence singer Amy Lee spoke to SiriusXM‘s “Debatable” on the Volume channel about the band’s upcoming album, “The Bitter Truth” (BMG). The band’s first collection of new original music in nine years, “The Bitter Truth” is being made available incrementally throughout 2020.

“We’re still writing, but we’re also recording,” she said (see video below). “We got four songs down, and then we really had to just be apart. And that was kind of good, but kind of hard — we just worked remotely for a while. We got the American band members back together. After getting COVID tests and tour buses brought guys from both coasts, we all holed up in Nick Raskulinecz, our producer, his private studio, so we were quarantining together for a little over a month.

Evanescence’s Amy Lee on the Band’s New Album, “The Bitter Truth”

Evanescence’s Amy Lee on the Band’s New Album, “The Bitter Truth”

The singer is ready for the band’s next era and to be seen as more than just a “cute frontwoman.”

In the early aughts—when Juicy Couture sweatsuits dominated and The O.C.’s Seth Cohen was TV’s no.1 man—it was nearly impossible to not hear Evanescence’s “Bring Me To Life” piercing the airwaves. The throaty vocals and crushing guitar riffs help raise the single to number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and secure its certified platinum status. So it’s almost hard to believe that nearly two decades ago that level of success seemed unattainable for the band.

“From every angle starting out, we were the indie long shot,” bandleader Amy Lee recalls to Marie Claire from her home in Nashville. “Too many things about us didn’t quite fit the mainstream for it to be safe to spin [on the radio].”
