Amy Lee: “The pressure comes when you feel like you can’t be yourself”

Evanescence will be hitting the east coast of Australia in February with their Synthesis – Live With Orchestra tour. We were lucky enough to chat with frontwoman Amy Lee ahead of the tour.

Performing with an orchestra that you can’t have multiple rehearsals with is no simple feat- what’s behind the decision to tour the upcoming album with local orchestras in each city?

It’s an incredible and intimidating thing. With 28 musicians being added to the band, I can’t really imagine how we would take them all on the road with us! Before we began the tour I was more than a little curious as to how well it would work, but it’s been working beautifully. We owe a lot of that to Susie Seiter, our touring conductor. She spends 2 hours with the orchestra every day going over the whole show and working through the hard parts, teaching them the music. We actually only get 30 minutes with band and orchestra together every day before the show that night, so most of our performance is being done for the very first time as a group in front of the audience. It creates this very raw energy during the show that I love.

Amy Lee on Lean Forward Podcast Episode

Amy Lee

Amy Lee of Evanescence has sold over 20 million albums worldwide, sells out arenas throughout the world, and has had radio hit after hit in multiple countries, and for some reason decided to sit down with Jay and Jacob to chat about it all. In Episode 15, the fellas dig deep with Amy about all things music including working on her new album “Synthesis” (which debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 20 charts) with David Campbell (Beck’s dad). Post-show, she also sent along her own quick hits with descriptions of why she likes the tunes she picked. And Jay & Jacob included their own Best of 2017 playlists.

Amy Lee on HoHo Show: “Is so healing in my heart travel with my family”

Amy Lee on Ho Ho Show

Evanescence singer Amy Lee caught up with Donny Fandango ahead of their SOLD OUT HoHo Show at Peabody Opera House on Sunday (December 3). She spoke about how the reimagining of Synthesis came to be, including the idea of playing with a full orchestra, playing beautiful theatres while wearing “fancy clothes”, how playing in this type of busy, high-level orchestral atmosphere forces her to focus and “step up” and much more.

Amy Lee on Ho Ho Show

“[The song] ‘Hi-Lo’ we’ve had in the bank for a long time,” Amy said (see video below). “I wasn’t quite finished [writing it before], but it’s just a song that never fit anywhere that I’ve been holding on to and waiting to find its right home for 10 years. So it’s this weird thing that I feel very close to already that I’ve had to listen to with my family and my friends to now finish it out and have the orchestra on it. That’s what it needed — it needed that beautiful, luscious emotion that [longtime collaborator, orchestra arranger and composer] David Campbell put on there. But I wrote that song with our producer on this album, the guy that did all the programming, Will [Hunt, not to be confused with Evanescence‘s drummer, also named Will Hunt]. It was our first collaboration together 10 years ago. And the other one, ‘Imperfection’, is brand new. We just wrote it this year. And it was very collaborative between Will, again, and also David Campbell, the arranger. He’s done all the string arranging for Evanescence for all of our albums, but this one… We went in [and said], ‘Let’s go in and go really deep and rip [the songs] apart and elevate ’em to another place together and make something new.’ So for all of it, and the new [song] included, he was a real part of what laid the foundation of what was gonna happen. So it gave the music and the writing and everything a chance to grow in some different directions.”

Amy Lee on Being a Woman in Music: ‘I Have Fought So Many Fights’

Evanescence

The Evanescence leader discusses her band’s ‘Synthesis album, and the inspiration behind single “Imperfection.”

Thirty years ago, when metal and hard rock ruled the airwaves, the genre had few female artists in the spotlight. During the ’90s, female-fronted bands like Lacuna Coil, Arch EnemyWithin Temptation and Nightwish started building their careers, but no woman in the scene achieved significant mainstream crossover success.

Then in 2003, Evanescence released its major-label debut, Fallen. Breakout track “Bring Me to Life” introduced the Arkansas quintet’s sound: singer-pianist Amy Lee’s siren vocals paired with crunchy guitars and gothic-flavored atmospheres. To date, the album has sold 8 million copies in the United States alone, according to Nielsen Music.

Lee’s success expanded the opportunities for other rock acts featuring women, and since then, groups like ParamoreThe Pretty Reckless and Halestorm have made their mark. Pretty Reckless frontwoman Taylor Momsen, who cites Evanescence as being her first concert when she was about 10 years old, considers Lee an innovator. continue reading
