Will Hunt: “Synthesis has done is broadened our horizons, but I’m excited about is the next one”

“When I’ve gone into all these different projects, I’ve always tried to be the chameleon. I feel like… I’ve actually conformed to the music,” Evanescence‘s longest standing drummer Will Hunt admits, struggling for the right phrase. “Whereas in Evanescence, I’m encouraged to be myself, and be okay with that.” 

He’s talking from the perspective of having played with bands from Black Label Society, to Device and Crossfade. But by the time he joined the group – fronted by iconic vocalist Amy Lee and formed back in 1995 – for third album Evanescence, he was ready to dive into the inherent challenges: complex rhythms, classically-based composition, and Lee’s penchant for originality.

The band’s latest release Synthesis from November, a masterpiece re-configuration of past classics with orchestral and electronic composition, is no different.

Ahead of the quintet’s nearly sold-out Australian tour in four days, Hunt sat down to chat about being thrown into the deep end with these orchestral shows, relating to rhythm guitarist Jen Majura‘s initial struggles after joining in 2015, and embracing his imperfections.

Amy’s described getting to play the Opera House as a dream come true for her. Do you feel the same way?

“It doesn’t matter if you’re from Australia, if you’ve ever been there or it’s something you’ve seen in person. I think as a musician and performer… Even in America, I grew up seeing pictures of that place and knew what it was from a very young age. I remember being in Australia back in 2012, and we were staying across the street from there [the Opera House]… I saw it and was just like, ‘Wow, man! What an incredible-looking building’.

With just a week to go until Evanescence kick off the Australian leg of their Synthesis: Live world tour, their first visit to our shores in six years, the anticipation of Australian fans has no doubt hit an all-time high. Following some time off after wrapping up the two U.S. Synthesis: Live tours, Overdrive sat down with guitarist, and more recently, theremin player, Jen Majura to chat all things Synthesis.

While the rest of the band (made up of vocalist Amy Lee, guitarist Troy McLawhorn, bassist Tim McCord, and drummer Will Hunt) have toured Australia in the past, this will be Jen’s first visit to our shores and she couldn’t be more excited. “Woohoo! I’m so looking forward to that trip. I’ve never been to Australia and I’ve always, always wanted to go and now thanks to Amy and Evanescence I finally get the chance to see Australia – and eat some Vegemite.” This excitement is a feeling mutually shared among the rest of the band, with Jen describing the tour as more like a big vacation-style trip with good friends.

In 2003 you’d be hard-pressed to find an Australian commercial radio station that wasn’t blasting Evanescence‘s Bring Me To Life.

The band’s frontwoman, Amy Lee, was transformed into a success story practically overnight. Her rock band sold hundreds of thousands of copies of its debut album with its first week alone. Fallen went on to sell more than 17 million copies worldwide, with one of its tracks featuring on the 2003 Daredevil film.

But behind the smokescreen of success, Lee was struggling to cope with fame.

Evanescence singer Amy Lee caught up with Donny Fandango ahead of their SOLD OUT HoHo Show at Peabody Opera House on Sunday (December 3). She spoke about how the reimagining of Synthesis came to be, including the idea of playing with a full orchestra, playing beautiful theatres while wearing “fancy clothes”, how playing in this type of busy, high-level orchestral atmosphere forces her to focus and “step up” and much more.

“[The song] ‘Hi-Lo’ we’ve had in the bank for a long time,” Amy said (see video below). “I wasn’t quite finished [writing it before], but it’s just a song that never fit anywhere that I’ve been holding on to and waiting to find its right home for 10 years. So it’s this weird thing that I feel very close to already that I’ve had to listen to with my family and my friends to now finish it out and have the orchestra on it. That’s what it needed — it needed that beautiful, luscious emotion that [longtime collaborator, orchestra arranger and composer] David Campbell put on there. But I wrote that song with our producer on this album, the guy that did all the programming, Will [Hunt, not to be confused with Evanescence‘s drummer, also named Will Hunt]. It was our first collaboration together 10 years ago. And the other one, ‘Imperfection’, is brand new. We just wrote it this year. And it was very collaborative between Will, again, and also David Campbell, the arranger. He’s done all the string arranging for Evanescence for all of our albums, but this one… We went in [and said], ‘Let’s go in and go really deep and rip [the songs] apart and elevate ’em to another place together and make something new.’ So for all of it, and the new [song] included, he was a real part of what laid the foundation of what was gonna happen. So it gave the music and the writing and everything a chance to grow in some different directions.”

Evanescence’s ‘Synthesis’ Cracks Billboard Top 10

Evanescence‘s “Synthesis” sold 34,000 equivalent album units in the week ending November 16, according to Nielsen Music, to land at position No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. Of that sum, 30,000 were in traditional album sales. The set is a reimagining of some of Evanescence‘s best-loved songs — as well as a couple of new ones. “Synthesis” is Evanescence‘s first album since its 2011 self-titled release, which debuted at No. 1. The new album is the group’s fourth top 10 effort, following “Evanescence”“The Open Door” (No. 1 in 2006) and “Fallen” (No. 3, 2003).

Q&A with Amy Lee on Stack: “I wanted to flip the script and challenge myself [about vocal rhythms on new track Imperfection]”

We asked Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee all about the band’s new album Synthesis – a collection of re-recordings (and two new tracks) of some of the alt-rock group’s most treasured songs, rearranged with full orchestra.

It’s amazing how so many of the orchestral instruments sound like they were always supposed to be there, and the electronic beats you’ve chosen have a very industrial feel, which fits the Evanescence style beautifully. Were many of these elements already imagined in your mind before you started this project?Synthesis

Thank you! Yes, actually. I didn’t know what the whole thing would sound like when we were done; there is so much detail that was created as we went. But honestly, this is more like the way I hear our music in my head.

Some of the decisions you’ve made here with arrangements, do they reflect ways that you’ve developed the tracks during their lives as part of your live setlist?

Yes. Not in the obvious ways. Our usual live show is very much about amplifying and energizing things to make a non-stop, heavy rock show. We add parts to build drama, make four bars into eight and add a drum solo, go straight from one song to the next. But this project isn’t feeding that need – it’s meant to be experienced in a different way. The things that I was able to add into these new versions that stemmed from the songs’ live growth over time is mainly about vocal performance. That little extra note in the bridge of Bring Me To Life (“only you…”) is a good example. That’s been something I do live when I’m really enjoying the moment and want to push further.

Amy Lee clarify the VIP packages with fans

Amy Lee took her facebook page last night to put things clear about the VIP experience the band are giving to the fans.

In a previous post when the band released a statement (14/08/2017) with the tour details in the official website they said:
